PESTEL with Business Model

After review on our PESTEL model, we decide to redo our business plan. Below is the brief idea for our first business product and how it links with the PESTEL:

Product or service 1: Fund or Loan
Picture
Politic: It can be positive or negative effect. In Malaysia, government does not support the idea of personal loan because they provide the education loan for student such as PTPTN or Kojadi loan. Private loan can be their competitor, however, it helps to improve the quality of education. Student needs money to complete their study, so that, in future, they can help to build up a better country.

Economy: It is positive since the economy in our country is dropping. Low income family is getting higher and higher. As the result, student needs loan.

Social Demography: Very risky for borrower or lender because most of the student does not pay back the loan.

Technology: In this high-technology era, personal data or identity can be easily traced. Information is more accurate and tracking system is more advance.

Environment: Neutral in our country, low natural disaster.

Legal: It is negative. We need the license or approval for transferring the money or loaning.

Hierarchy of Maslow

Picture
This is the visual to outline the needs of our project. Basing on the Hierarchy of Needs (Maslow), it helps to serve as a guide to find the solution. The hierarchy is worked from the bottom to the top and it is linked.

Physiological: Research found that student needs money to complete their course. Without the basic, they may suffer the financial problem and unable to continue staying in the college.

Safety Needs: Student needs hostel or place to stay. The rental fees are very high and the room is limited.

Belongingness: Once students solve the financial problem and find the place to settle down, they need social. The committee or work group of people is necessary to work as interpersonal communication.

Esteem: At this stage, student can complete their study and pay off their tuition fees. They have more time to concentrate on their coursework and catch up with each subject.

Cognitive: Student needs work and experience. With the distinction or merit performance in college, they able to get higher position and work. Working gains precious experience.

Aesthetic: As the working group of people, they can spend their free time to develop or refresh themselves with art, music and other, balancing their life.

Self-actualization: With the extraordinary performance of their life, they are now recognized and lead other people.

Transcendence: They can become the mentor for new generation or borrower or lender.

Survey Result : Financial Problem for college student in TARC

Discount of Printing Costs and Free Book Problem

This survey was done by our team member

Teoh Harn Wei

This survey was taking placed in TAR College (KL branch and Penang Branch) and Taylor College.
Total people had done surveyed : 14

Questionnaire:
  1.  Should college/University given discount printing cost for student?
  2. Should college/University given free book to student?

Chien from SBS TARC, Advanced Diploma Year 1
  1. He disagreed. It is unfair to the suppliers unless there is competition. It also depends on the University’s policy on whether to subsidize them or not. If the printing costs are subsidized, student may be happy about it but it may lessen the competitive advantage of other suppliers. There are always two sides to a coin hence it depends on which perspective you are looking from.
  2. He agreed if we were to compare Malaysia with other nations such as Australia, not only do they provide free education for primary and secondary level but also for tertiary level. As there are still many rural areas around Malaysia where families are not wealthy enough to afford books, hence the government should at least provide free books or subsidize it.

Wong.K.P from DQS SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed with it can reduce the burden.
  2. He agreed with text Book very expensive, next semester also can’t use.

Ken from DQS SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed because we spend too much to rental, and not enough money to pay of printing cost.
  2. He agreed because now rental very expensive, meal also expensive. College should free book to student, it can reduce pocket money from parent.

Lucas from AEL SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed. Student pay fees to study and learn, extra charges printing in coursework, assignment, should not be further incurred on student. Unfair for student who needs a lot of paperwork. Example: Resubmission of thick report due to academic unsatisfactory will cause burdens to the particular student who needs to respectively print again.
  2. He agreed. Book and publications are usually costly, which is not affordable by student. All student have their right and equality to study and learn from books, regardless of their economic background (whether they are rich or poor)

Christina from DAC SBS TARC, Year2
  1. She agreed because have many subject need do assignment. If the assignments have doing wrong, need reprint. This is very heavy cost for student.
  2. She agreed the book store that sell very expensive. Some of the student having financial problem.

Huang from DIB SAS TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed and it can reduce student expenses, because we are already pay school fees and no extra money to pay printing cost.
  2. He disagreed and think college not like bank, actually college already treat us very good, something like canteen food very cheap.

Wong from AEL SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed. If each subjecthas at least one assignment then the printing cost for a school of students to complete study can approximately buy a house. No need print, just past up soft copy as lecturers also have no space to keep our assignment hard copy. While, soft copy is the prove of high technology.
  2. He disagreed. In Malaysia, for primary and secondary school free book is given because the text books written by Malaysian. Tertiary school and above or mostly the text books or reference books are written oversea and with copyright go a huge amount of money needed for each students for only books. However library has already provided the book needed for further knowledge or students can borrow. The study materials had summarized by lecturers and uploaded at CEL.

James from DQS SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed with printing cost very expensive, if pay the printing cost after then not has money to pay next semester school fees, and can’t continue to study in this college.
  2. He agreed with it because nowadays in Malaysia has too many poor people. College should give free book to student because this book only used in 1 semester, and the next semester still need to buy new book, its expensive.

King from AEL SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed. The high printing cost is burdensome to students who are still conducting their tertiary studies and without financial ability. The reduction in printing cost would be able to help and encourage students to print out their notes and tutorials in order to ease their studies.
  2. He agreed. Costly text books and exercise books could be a critical issue to students who are currently facing financial problems in conducting their tertiary studies. I believe that free books provided would be able to alleviate the problem.

Giap from AEL SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed. This will be an incentive to students. Especially encouraging redrafting and reprinting the error the students made to produce the master price of their assignment.
  2. He disagreed with information nowadays are deliberately and abundantly available on the web, this vastly developed source of knowledge has proved electronic devices are stronger than books. The authority should sponsor free devices instead. Free book are just money spent on white elephant.

Hui from AEL SOT TARC, Year1
  1. He agreed and thinks discount should be given because the government taxes are quite enough to cover those printing cost. Besides that, the students will have more printed copy to study. This will encourage the study environment.
  2. He agreed and thinks discount should be given because the government taxes are quite enough to cover those printing cost. Besides that, the students will have more printed copy to study. This will encourage the study environment.

Roy from SPS TARC, Advanced Diploma Year1
  1. He agreed. College should discount printing assignment cost lower student burden, 1semester also need RM10 printing cost for assignment.
  2. He agreed with that might be a problem but if do success to runthe program, it will help student save money cost.

Christine from SBS TARC (PENANG), Advanced Diploma Year1
  1. She agreed due it can save a lot, can reuse by passing down to junior, it also kind of environment save behavior.
  2. She agreed due it can save a lot, can reuse by passing down to junior, it also kind of environment save behavior.

Tan.S.Y from A level of Taylor’s College, year 1
  1. She agreed with printing cost very expensive, not everyone got money can buy Iphone, Smart phone to take pictures in lecture hall, and every week needs to pay printing cost RM5 for 1subject, 1month RM20-30).
  2. She agreed with print text book very expensive, and buy book also very expensive.

Analysis result after surveying

Based on the survey above, majority of the surveyors are supporting with the statements of “free book” and “discount on printing cost” which is possible and workable. I believe that the reduction in printing cost would be able to encourage students to print out their notes / tutorials in order to ease their studies and free books provided by college / university would be able to alleviate some student’s financial problem.
